Spay and Neuter Benefits

Why Spay or Neuter?
Spaying and neutering helps dogs live longer, healthier lives. It dramatically reduces a number of health problems that can be very difficult or expensive to treat. Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer. Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease.

Spaying and neutering creates better behavior.
Spaying and neutering reduces aggression toward other dogs, particularly for males. These procedures also reduce territorial behavior, as dogs otherwise tend to be overprotective of their home ground. Spaying and neutering reduce dogs’ tendencies to run away and to be dominant. Altered dogs don’t need to mark their perceived territory (by urinating or defecating) as much. They don’t exhibit as much unwanted sexual behavior, such as riding, sniffing, and licking.

Fewer dogs are put to sleep.
Millions of dogs are put to sleep every year because of overpopulation. If your pet is not altered and runs free, you may be contributing to the deaths of these dogs.

Spaying and neutering is good for the community.
Communities spend millions of dollars to control unwanted animals. Irresponsible breeding contributes to the problems of dog bites and attacks. Animal shelters are overburdened with surplus animals. Stray pets and homeless animals get into trash containers, defecate in public areas or on private lawns, and frighten or anger people who have no understanding of their misery or needs. Some stray animals also scare away or kill birds and wildlife.

We cannot accept dog complaints by email. If you have a complaint please call our office at 419-334-2372.

We need your name and address and as much information about the dog owner as possible. The more information (name, address, type of offense) that you can give the better we can do our job. We do not handle barking dogs, cats, or wildlife.

We have to see a violation to issue a citation, UNLESS you wish to sign a sworn statement. Keep in mind false statements can be prosecuted as perjury.

Due to budget constraints regarding overtime and staff limitations the dog warden's office does not respond to after hours complaints except in the case of emergency dog bites. Resolution 2008-27 Section 2.
