Sandusky County Dog Warden's Office Adoption Procedure

All stray dogs that have reached the state-mandated 72 hour holding period can be adopted at that time.  If there is more than one person interested in that dog, we use a lottery type system. We do not hold dogs, or accept deposits on dogs to be held. We realize this procedure is sometimes inconvenient to some of our clients. However, years of adopting dogs to the community have shown this to be the most fair and practical method. Dogs surrendered by their owner, may be adopted immediately. To adopt a dog you, or a representative, must personally sign the adoption papers.

Adoption Fees:
  1. Regular adoption: $80.00
  2. Adoption of dog that has already been altered: $70.00
  3. Adoption of dog to a verifiable 501C: No fee, but must be registered with the Department of Agriculture.
  4. Adoption of dog already altered to a 501C: No fee, but must be registered with the Department of Agriculture.
  5. Add $18.00 for licenses to all fees except for dogs: leaving the State of Ohio, going to an organization with a valid kennel license, or dogs going to a Humane Society Shelter.
  6. Micro-chip available for additional $25.00.

Once the adoption papers are signed, we will contact one of our local veterinarians that have agreed to help our office spay and neuter. We will set up an appointment for your new dog to be spay/neutered, receive its “first shots,” and its one year rabies vaccination, all at no charge to you. Any other veterinarian work is paid by the new dog owner.

You may then take the dog home with you and take it to the appointment that has been set up by our office.  This will give you and your dog time to bond before the vet appointment.

Complaints:

If you wish to file a formal complaint about a dog, be prepared to give our office the most information that you can. Please keep in mind, all of our work here is public knowledge. We cannot keep your name anonymous unless you can demonstrate a clear threat to your safety.

We cannot accept dog complaints by email. If you have a complaint please call our office at 419-334-2372.

We need your name and address and as much information about the dog owner as possible. The more information (name, address, type of offense) that you can give the better we can do our job. We do not handle barking dogs, cats, or wildlife.

We have to see a violation to issue a citation, UNLESS you wish to sign a sworn statement. Keep in mind false statements can be prosecuted as perjury.

Due to budget constraints regarding overtime and staff limitations the dog warden's office does not respond to after hours complaints except in the case of emergency dog bites. Resolution 2008-27 Section 2.
