WHEN A DOG SHOWS UP some distance from your home, people have no idea where that dog belongs, so they call us. If we pick up your dog, it is transported to the shelter. We feed and water it, and it is safe until you can reclaim it. If the dog does not have license on its collar it can be adopted out in three days. If it has a license on its collar we have to hold the dog by state law for two weeks.
1. Contact the Dog Warden's office (419) 334-2372. Our office will fill out a lost dog report. Give us the best description of your dog possible. The more you can tell us about your dog, the easier identification will be for our employees. If your dog has a microchip, please give us the number. We scan all dogs that come into our shelter.
LOST DOG FORM: May be downloaded and mailed to: Sandusky County Dog Warden, 1950 Countryside Place, Fremont, Ohio 43420. You may also complete and send email to: scdandk@glis.cc PICTURES WELCOME.
2. Plan to visit us, and look for you dog. Our employees work very hard to help identify your dog, but we have almost 700 dogs come in per year, and many dogs look a great deal alike.
3. Contact your local newspaper and place an advertisement in the classified ads. Also contact the Humane Society (419-334-4517) as people sometime mistakenly take stray dogs there.

If you wish to file a formal complaint about a dog, be prepared to give our office the most information that you can. Please keep in mind, all of our work here is public knowledge. We cannot keep your name anonymous unless you can demonstrate a clear threat to your safety.
We cannot accept dog complaints by email. If you have a complaint please call our office at 419-334-2372.
We need your name and address and as much information about the dog owner as possible. The more information (name, address, type of offense) that you can give the better we can do our job. We do not handle barking dogs, cats, or wildlife.
We have to see a violation to issue a citation, UNLESS you wish to sign a sworn statement. Keep in mind false statements can be prosecuted as perjury.
Due to budget constraints regarding overtime and staff limitations the dog warden's office does not respond to after hours complaints except in the case of emergency dog bites. Resolution 2007-19 Section 2.
