Why should I attach the license to my dog’s collar?
1)  It’s the law. According to Section 955.10, every registered dog, except those constantly confined to registered kennels, shall at all times wear a valid tag issued in connection with the certificate evidencing such registration. Failure at any time to wear such a tag shall be prima facie evidence of lack of registration and shall subject any dog found not wearing such a tag to impounding, sale, or destruction.

2)  Dogs that are captured without a valid license are required by state law to be held for three days until euthanized or adopted. Dogs with licenses on their collars, on the other hand, are required to be held two weeks before euthanasia or adoption. Copies of dog license numbers are held by some local law enforcement agencies, and of course, the pound. Generally, people like to call and get your phone number, and call you (to give YOU a chance to get your dog home) before they call us to pick up your dog.
Place the license on your dog’s collar. There are various ways to attach the tag to the collar. Some people use small key chain rings, some use S-hooks, and some rivet the tag to the collar.
Microchips
Microchips are very advantageous to dogs and their owners. They help to identify dogs that have lost their collars or dogs that have been stolen.
A microchip implant is an identifying integrated circuit placed under a dog’s neck skin. The chips are about the size of a large grain of rice and operate on a passive RFID technology. Each chip contains a specific number, similar to a dog license number. The chip number is registered through the company to the dog’s owner. When a dog has a chip, we read the number with a scanner and attempt to contact the owner through that number. It is important to keep the registration information (such as your name and address) current with the microchip company.

Although, not legally required to do so, we give the same attention to finding the owner of a chipped dog as we do to dogs that are wearing valid licenses. (See Ohio Revised Code on our home page) Dog licenses are a method to identify the owner of a dog, and used to fund the Sandusky County Dog Warden’s Office. We are self-funded and do not receive money from the county general fund. Therefore, a chip does not take the place of a license.
To have a chip implanted, please call your veterinarian. The cost is reasonable for those who truly love their pets. Once your dog is chipped, let our office know the number, and we will include it on your registration.
