Why Should I Attach The License to my Dog's Collar?
#1- It's the law. (955.10-Tags to be worn.-Every registered dog, except dogs constantly confined to registered kennels, shall at all times wear a valid tag issued in connection with the certificate evidencing such registration. Failure at any time to wear such a tag shall be prima-facie evidence of lack of registration and shall subject any dog found not wearing such a tag to impounding, sale, or destruction.)
#2-Dogs that are captured without a valid license are required by state law to be held three days until euthanasia or adoption. Dogs with licenses on their collars are required to be held 2 WEEKS before euthanasia or adoption. Copies of dog license numbers are held by some local law enforcement agencies, and of course, the pound. People generally like to call one of us and get the number to give YOU a chance to get your dog home, before they call us.
Microchips
A microchip implant is an identifying integrated circuit placed under the skin of a dog. The chips are about the size of a large grain of rice and are based on a passive RFID technology. We read numbers on the chips with a scanner. The number is like dog license number. It is registered through the company to the dog's owner. When a dog has a chip we read the number and attempt to contact the owner through that number. It is important to keep the registration information (your name, address, etc.) current with the company.
Although not legally required to do so, we give the same attention to finding a dog's owner that is chipped as we do to dogs that are wearing valid licenses (see ORC on our home page). Dog licenses are a method to identify the owner of a dog, and they are also used to fund the County Dog Warden's Office, which does not receive funds from the general fund of the county. Therefore, a chip does not take the place of a license. Chips are very advantageous for many reasons. They help to identify dogs that have lost their collars, or dogs that have been stolen. To have a chip implanted please call your veterinarian. The cost is reasonable for those who truly love their pets. Once your dog is chipped let our office know the number and we will include it on your registration.
If you wish to file a formal complaint about a dog, be prepared to give our office the most information that you can. Please keep in mind, all of our work here is public knowledge. We cannot keep your name anonymous unless you can demonstrate a clear threat to your safety.
We cannot accept dog complaints by email. If you have a complaint please call our office at 419-334-2372.
We need your name and address and as much information about the dog owner as possible. The more information (name, address, type of offense) that you can give the better we can do our job. We do not handle barking dogs, cats, or wildlife.
We have to see a violation to issue a citation, UNLESS you wish to sign a sworn statement. Keep in mind false statements can be prosecuted as perjury.
Due to budget constraints regarding overtime and staff limitations the dog warden's office does not respond to after hours complaints except in the case of emergency dog bites. Resolution 2007-19 Section 2.
